Mike Krieger Says Claude, Cowork and Claude Code Will Stop Being Three Separate Products

In a wide-ranging interview with Sources.news on 15 May, Anthropic Labs lead Mike Krieger called the current split between Claude.ai, Claude Cowork and Claude Code "a broken abstraction we need to fix" and signalled that the company will collapse them into a single offering on the back of a shared agent harness. The former Instagram co-founder also framed the Labs team's job as hunting for "the next Claude Code" — first-party products that only ship when they reveal a genuinely new capability, naming health and civic engagement as the next frontiers he wants to push the model into.

Claude Code 2.1.143 Lands With Plugin Dependency Enforcement and Per-Turn Cost Estimates

The 15 May Claude Code release tightens plugin handling with a new dependency check that blocks disabling a plugin other enabled plugins still rely on, and automatic enabling of transitive dependencies on install. The marketplace browse pane now shows projected token cost per turn and per invocation, helping teams budget context spend before they click install. Background sessions also keep their model and effort settings across respawn, and PowerShell is now on by default for Bedrock, Vertex and Foundry users on Windows.

Judge Holds Back Final Sign-Off on Anthropic's $1.5bn Authors Settlement

US District Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin used a San Francisco hearing on 14 May to demand more detail on the legal fees and lead-plaintiff payments inside what would be the largest known copyright settlement in the country. The deal, struck after authors accused Anthropic of training Claude on their books, was provisionally approved last September by a retired judge, but Martinez-Olguin's reluctance to grant final approval reopens questions about how the $1.5 billion will be divided and whether some objecting authors might prise it open. Reuters says the next move is hers.

Marc Benioff Says Salesforce Will Spend Roughly $300m on Anthropic Tokens This Year

Speaking on the All-In podcast and recapped by Meyka on 16 May, Salesforce chief executive Marc Benioff pegged his company's 2026 Anthropic bill at about $300 million, with most of it going on coding agents that automate developer workflows rather than chatbot experiments. The figure is one of the largest single-customer token commitments disclosed so far and underlines why Anthropic's enterprise run rate has accelerated past $30 billion. Benioff said the spend reflects coding agents moving from pilot projects to baseline operating expense.

Fast Mode in Claude Code Now Defaults to Opus 4.7

Claude Code 2.1.142, shipped on 14 May, makes Opus 4.7 the default model behind the /fast switch, retiring the 4.6 configuration that had powered the feature since February. Fast Mode keeps the full one-million-token context and the model's normal quality but routes more inference compute to token generation, so output speeds up roughly 2.5x at six times the standard price. The release also adds new claude agents flags for permission mode, model and effort, and lets root-level SKILL.md files appear in the plugin pane as skills.
